Cheap Vienna from Edinburgh: an all-in weekend from ~£260
Vienna makes a grand first impression without forcing a grand budget. The imperial palaces, the Ringstrasse boulevard, and the old coffee houses are all free to admire from the outside, and the city centre is compact enough to see on foot. From Edinburgh it is only 3h07 by plane, so a long weekend is easy to justify.
The trick is knowing where the money goes. Locals eat well for little at market stalls and sausage stands, ride an excellent public transport network, and treat a single coffee as a ticket to sit for hours. Do the same and Vienna feels a lot cheaper than its polished reputation suggests.

Vienna on a budget
Many of the best things cost nothing: strolling the Ringstrasse, the gardens of Schönbrunn and the Belvedere, St. Stephen's Cathedral, and the stalls of the Naschmarkt. For meals, a hot dog from a Würstelstand or a plate at a market beats a sit-down restaurant, and a glass of wine at a Heuriger tavern on the city's edge is a local ritual rather than a splurge. Sitting all afternoon over one coffee is not just tolerated here, it is the tradition.
Getting around and neighbourhoods
Public transport (U-Bahn, trams, and buses) is efficient and a 24, 48, or 72-hour pass usually pays off fast, while the historic core is small enough to walk. Base yourself in the central 1st district for atmosphere, or look at Neubau (7th) and Leopoldstadt (2nd) for cheaper rooms with easy access. Trams 1 and 2 trace much of the Ringstrasse, giving you a sightseeing loop for the price of a normal ticket.
Best time to visit
Spring and early autumn bring mild weather, lighter crowds, and better room rates than the peak summer months. Winter is cold but comes with Christmas markets and a cosy coffee-house season, so pack warm layers if you visit then. Whenever you come from Edinburgh, booking your 3h07 by plane journey ahead usually secures the lowest fares.
