Budapest sits on both banks of the Danube, and it remains one of Central Europe's best-value city breaks. From London it is roughly 2h56 by plane, close enough for a long weekend and cheap enough that you rarely have to watch every euro.

The city splits into hilly, quiet Buda and flat, busy Pest, linked by a string of bridges over the river. Thermal baths, grand cafes, and late-night ruin bars all cost a fraction of what you would pay in Western Europe, which is exactly why so many travellers keep coming back.

Budapest on a budget

Hungary uses the forint, not the euro, and prices in everyday spots stay noticeably lower than in Paris or Vienna. Eat where locals do, cheap set lunches, market halls, and bakery snacks, and you can keep a day's food and drink modest. Public thermal baths, riverside walks, and free-to-enter churches mean plenty to do without spending much at all.

Getting around and neighbourhoods

The metro, trams, and buses are extensive and inexpensive, so you can skip taxis entirely; a single ticket or a short-stay travel pass covers most trips. Base yourself in central Pest (districts V, VI, and VII) to stay walking distance from the main sights and the ruin-bar nightlife. Cross a bridge into Buda for the Castle district and hillside views, easily reached on foot or by tram.

Best time to visit

Spring and early autumn bring mild weather and thinner crowds, which usually means better deals on rooms too. Summer is warm and lively but busier and pricier, while winter is cold yet atmospheric, with the added draw of soaking in steaming outdoor thermal baths. Whenever you arrive from London, booking your stay a few weeks ahead helps keep costs down.
