Calvi sits on the northwest coast of Corsica, France, where a Genoese Citadel looks down over a wide arc of sand and a bustling Marina. Reaching it from Edinburgh takes about 3h17 by plane, and once you arrive the town is compact enough to explore entirely on foot, which keeps costs low.

This is a place where the free things are the best things. You can wander the ramparts of the old citadel, stretch out on Calvi Beach, and walk the palm-lined harbour without spending a euro. Use it as a base for the hills of La Balagne and you get a proper Corsican trip without the price tag of the big resorts.

Doing Calvi on a budget

The headline sights cost nothing, so your money goes on food and a bed. Skip the harbour-front restaurants where you pay for the view and eat one street back, or shop the morning market and picnic on the beach. Fill a water bottle before you set off, since a walk up to Notre-Dame-de-la-Serra and back can take a couple of hours.

Getting around and where to stay

Calvi is small and walkable, and the beach, the Marina, and the Genoese Citadel are all within a few minutes of each other on foot. The little coastal train that runs along the Balagne shore is a cheap way to reach nearby beaches and villages without renting a car. For lower nightly rates, look at rooms a short walk back from the seafront rather than right on the Marina, and consider the villages of La Balagne if you have your own transport.

When to go

Calvi is busiest and priciest in July and August, when both crowds and room rates peak. Late spring and early autumn bring warm, quieter days and noticeably lower prices, which is when the budget maths works best. Winter is calm and cheap but many seasonal restaurants and boat trips close, so check ahead before you book.
